In a press release Tuesday, the State Patrol identified the wrecker operator as Nathan E. Walsh, 38, Osseo. Walsh had recently become an area manager for Jerry's Towing Inc., Roberts.
Initial investigation indicates that the flatbed wrecker, which was parked on the right shoulder in front of the disabled car preparing for loading, had its emergency warning lights engaged when the wrecker operator, who was wearing a reflective yellow jacket, was struck by a pickup traveling in the right lane.
The pickup then sideswiped the tow truck before stopping. The striking driver stayed on-scene and is cooperating in the investigation, according to the State Patrol.
Initial lifesaving attempts by a responding trooper and enhanced emergency medical service procedures by Osseo ambulance personnel were attempted. The struck victim died on-scene.
The pickup driver was identified Tuesday  as Steven E. Dolan, 50, La Crosse. Neither he nor his passenger, Matthew Edward Dolan, 26, Elk Mound, was injured.
West-bound I-94 traffic was shifted to the left lane during the investigation.
The Wisconsin State Patrol is conducting a reconstruction of the crash and requests that any witnesses to this incident contact the Patrol at 715.839.3000
