She should
have been walking down the aisle this month but instead Caroline
Wozniacki was pounding the streets of New York on Sunday.
The
24-year-old professional tennis player signed up for the New York
Marathon after fiance and professional golfer Rory McIlroy called off
their engagement in May, just days after they sent out their
invitations.
And
although Caroline insisted her decision to enter the marathon had
nothing to do with her heartbreak, it won't have escaped fans' attention
that she chose to run in the same city, and on the same weekend -
according to the Irish Independent - that her wedding was due to take place.

Celebrations: Caroline Wozniacki was
greeted at the finish line of the New York marathon by Serena Williams
as she completed the course on what reportedly should have been her
wedding weekend with Rory McIlroy
Happier times: Rory McIlroy reportedly
got cold feet and dumped Caroline just days after their wedding
invitations were sent out earlier this year
Caroline
- whose wedding date had been rumoured to be either this weekend or
next - completed the course in an impressive three hours, 26 minutes and
33 seconds and proving that she doesn't need the golfer, she was
greeted at the finish line by her close pal and fellow tennis
professional Serena Williams.
World
number nine Wozniacki ran for children's charity 'Team for Kids' and
has raised over $81,000 on fundraising site 'Crowdrise'.
Before
the race, she posted a selfie to her Twitter page, alongside the
caption, 'Ready or not... Here I come. Few min left! @nycmarathon'.
The
photograph showed her, and her fellow runners, wrapped up in plenty of
layers ready to tackle the New York Marathon, where the temperature was
recorded at just 5.5 degrees on the morning of the race.

Caroline Wozniacki slipped on her running shoes to complete the New York
Marathon in 3 hours 26 minutes and showed no sign of being upset about
her cancelled wedding
Pushing through: The tennis star grimaced as she makes a last push to the finish line on Sunday
Regardless
of the difficult conditions, Danish-born Wozniacki completed the race,
and was met at the finish line by an emotional Serena.
Williams,
who herself is ranked number one in the world, is good friends with her
fellow tennis professional, and tweeted explaining that she cried upon
greeting Wozniacki at the finish.
In the competitive standings, Wilson Kipsang and Mary Keitany claimed a famous double for Kenya as they raced to victory.
Kipsang
crossed the line in two hours, 10 minutes and 59 seconds, the slowest
winning time since 1995 on a day when chill winds hampered the
competitors, while Keitany made it home in 2.25.07.
Happy: Just
minutes before the race, the tennis player tweeted: 'Ready or not...
Here I come', left. Right, she celebrated at the finish line
Rory who?
Wozniacki celebrated her impressive time alongside Williams after the
race proving that she has firmly moved on from her heartbreak thanks to
pals
She
sprinted past compatriot Jemina Sumgong with just a few hundred yards
to go, and Portugal's Sara Moreira finished third with the women
starting ahead of their male counterparts.
Kipsang
followed suit, breaking the tape seven seconds ahead of Lelisa Desisa,
who led fellow Ethiopian and 2010 winner Gebre Gebremariam home.
Caroline had reportedly already tried on her bridal dress before her ex-fiance, Rory, 25, called off their wedding.
According to The Times, the 23-year-old had tried on her wedding dress ahead of the planned November marriage.
In a shock move, the golfer announced that they had split as he was not ready for ‘all that marriage entails’.

McIlroy confirmed the split , saying 'it was mutual and amicable and we both thought it was the best for us'.
Multi-millionaire
McIlroy admitted that he got cold feet after the wedding invitations
were posted, saying: ‘The problem is all mine’.
‘There
is never a good time to end a relationship,’ he said and he added that
the decision to call off the engagement was both 'mutual and
amicable'.
After
two years together, McIlroy, who is worth an estimated £28million,
proposed to Wozniacki in Sydney, Australia, on New Year's Day with a
stunning £120,000 diamond ring.
According
to sources, their wedding was due to take place at the Rockefeller
Centre in New York on November 8 but there are also rumours that it was
November 1.
In
a brief statement issued morning through his Dublin-based
communications consultants, McIlroy said he was making the announcement
publicly after talking to Wozniacki.
'The problem is mine,' he said.
'The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realise that I wasn't ready for all that marriage entails.
All for a good cause: World number
nine Wozniacki ran for children's charity 'Team for Kids' and has raised
over $81,000 on fundraising site 'Crowdrise'
'I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we've had.'
At
the time of their engagement, Wozniacki, who is worth an estimated
£15m, posted a picture of the engagement ring on her Twitter account,
writing: 'Happy new year everyone! Rory and I started 2014 with a bang!
...I said YES!!!!'
He
then shared the same picture and added: 'Happy New Year everyone! I
have a feeling it's going to be a great year!! My first victory of 2014
#shesaidyes!!'
The pair have experienced an on/off relationship during their time together.
Sources
close to the high-profile couple claimed the Irish golfer broke it off
with Wozniacki in April last year - days after she posted a picture on
Twitter showing him asleep and open-mouthed with his glasses on.
Joyous: Serena was overjoyed for her pal and they shared a hug at the finish line
Standing out in the crowd: In her hot pink ensemble, Caroline stood out in the crowd and looked fresh-faced upon her finish
Friends at the time said there was no way back and the tennis ace was described as being 'absolutely devastated'.
But
she was then spotted among the gallery watching McIlroy at the Dubai
World Championships in November. It was the first time the Danish tennis
star had been seen at a golf event since she donned caddies’ overalls
for the par three tournament at the Masters back in April.
Earlier
in 2013, McIlroy was warned by Britain's greatest-ever golfer Nick
Faldo to 'concentrate on golf' after a dramatic slump in form.
Last
December the pair were forced to deny rumours they were engaged after
Wozniacki was spotted wearing a huge diamond ring on her wedding ring
finger.
Engaged: After two years together,
McIlroy, who is worth an estimated £28million, proposed to Wozniacki in
Sydney, Australia, on New Year's Day with a stunning £120,000 diamond
ring
Speculation
first began when the tennis star was seen flashing the diamond and
sapphire jewel as she arrived at Brisbane International Airport.
They
eventually confirmed their engagement on New Year’s Day after McIlroy,
who won the U.S. Open in 2011 and the U.S. PGA Championship in 2012,
proposed during a fireworks show on New Year's Eve in Sydney.
In an interview with Danish magazine, Lime, she even told how she dreamed of becoming a young mother.
She
said: ‘I want to be a relatively young mother, and I do not see it as
being too far in the future. I have always been like that. I would want
to bring up my children.
‘Therefore,
I have no dream to make my mark. Instead, I enjoy economic freedom my
hard work has given me. It means that I can give my children the best
start in life.’
